• English Heritage has attacked the Government for rejecting the proposed road tunnel extension of the A303 near Stonehenge for a cheaper and straighter route that could threaten the ancient monument.
English Heritage Chairman Jaclyn Stevens, accused the Department of Transport of reviving abandoned routes and bringing forward new ones without sufficient consultation with the joint working party set up by the Department, English Heritage and the National Trust. Based on the cost of a recently commissioned tunnel bypass scheme in Hindhead, English Heritage believe the rejected 850-metre tunnel at Stonehenge would cost £17m— less than the overland routes the DOT has proposed. Objections and a final decision on the route are due at November's planning conference.
