A NOVEL feature of an airfield crash tender recently shipped to Australia is a swivelling multi-jet monitor mounted at the front of the roof of the cab. It can be controlled by the driver or the first officer from inside the. vehicle, The tender is one of two built by Airfoam Fire Protection, Ltd., on Thornycroft Nubian four-wheel-drive chassis. One machine incorporates a Rolls-Royce eight-cylindered petrol engine and the other a Thornycroft four-cylindered unit.
The more powerful tender can attain 65 m.p.h. on hard surfaces and is fitted with foam and CO, dispensing equipment and a 2,500-3,000 g.p.m. pump driven by a power take-off. it carries 450 gallons of water and 50 gallons of foam compound. The other vehicle is primarily a water bowser. having capacity for 600 gallons, but also carries a comprehensive range of fire-extinguishing, rescue and first-aid equipment. It has a forward sparge head for fighting grass fires.
The two machines working together can produce 15,000 gallons of foam-without a break at the rate of 3,000 g.p.m.
