• An appeal by J. B. Leach (Eastbourne) Ltd., haulage contractor, of Finmore Road, Eastbourne. against fines imposed by Cheltenham magistrates for offences arising from an accident involving one of its lorries, was dismissed at Gloucester County Quarter Sessions on Thursday of last week.
Mr. G. Hamilton, for the respondents, said the company pleaded guilty at the magistrates court on December 1, to four charges and was fined a total of £95.
Three charges concerned defects found by a MoT examiner who tested the lorry involved in the accident at Uckington on July 24, including faulty brakes and two defective tyres, and a further charge of failing to display the laden weight on the lorry.
Mr, A. Perkins, one of the company's directors, said the vehicle concerned had been given a maintenance test on July 21 by one of its fitters. Since the accident the company had dismissed the fitter after discovering another case of his faulty workmanship. "It was pure negligence on his part," added Mr. Perkins.
