THE government is to try to put a figure on the damage done to buildings, roads and people by heavy lorries.
Mr Kenneth Marks, environment under-secretary, told the House of Commons this week that the impact on the environment of different kinds of travel and traffic must be taken into account, "however difficult it is to measure it."
The move will satisfy the environment lobby who have always complained that a balanced transport policy is impossible unless the real cost of road transport could be computed.
