THE OPERATION of special journeys, on a stage-carriage service operated by the West Yorkshire PTE, between Bradford and Leeds, to connect with extended tours operated by Heaps Tours Ltd, was in reality no different than the operation of a conventional " feeder " service by Heaps themselves.
This was argued by Mr W. J. King, commercial manager of National Travel (North East) Ltd, when he opposed the proposed operation, before the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners last week.
Mr Arnold Stone, Leeds district manager of the PTE, said he saw nothing wrong in the use of a stage-carriage service to feed extended tours in this manner. In fact, there was some precedent, as stage services were used in some areas to feed day-excursion operations.
Mr John Tutty, managing director of Heaps, said if his company had applied for a feeder service it would have been opposed by the PTE on the grounds of abstraction of traffic from the stage-carriage service.
Mr King said that if the application was granted, National were likely to suffer the most because their programme was very similar to that put out by Heaps.
After hearing five public witnesses give evidence of the convenience of being assured of a seat on the bus service to Leeds, the Commissioners adjourned the hearing until today (February 6).
