A STATUTORY joint industrial council should be set up for the road haulage industry as soon as possible, the Road Haulage Association said this week.
It has called on the Secretary of State for Employment to establish a JIC under the Employment Protection Act 1975. This move is in anticipation of the winding up of the Road Haulage Wages Council.
"It is fully appreciated," said Mr G. K. Newman, RHA director-general, "that the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service is at present engaged in investigating the question of abolishing the Wages Council.
"We consider that the Council should not be wound up until a satisfactory alternative is provided and that a statutory joint industrial council would serve that purpose."
