DEMONSTRATIONS were given last week of a new industrial tractor which, as announced in The Commercial Motor of August 16, is to be marketed by Reddey Hydrostatic Sales Ltd., Sandycombe Road, Richmond, Surrey. Called the Hydro Tug, the tractor is a threewheeler and can be either electrically powered or fitted with a small petrol engine. It is manufactured by The Little Green Engineering Co. Ltd., Manchester.
Hydrostatic transmission is employed on the Hydro Tug, a compact and easily removable power pack incorporating the required oil pumps, electric motor (or 1.C. engine), controls and valves. The high pressure oil output from this unit is fed to a five-cylinder slow-speed hydraulic motor built into the front wheel of the tractor. On the electric models, the motor is a 5 h.p. heavy-duty traction type operating at 3,000 r.p.m. and either diesel or L.P.G. engines are available.
Driving controls are simplified by the use of the hydrostatic transmission; a single pedal, together with the reverse lever gives full forward and reverse control of the vehicle. Speeds from a crawl to a maximum of 6-5 m.p.h. can be obtained according to the pressure placed on the pedal, and when this pressure is released hydraulic braking automatically results. This can be supplemented, when required by a hand brake operating on the rear wheels, which is also used for parking.
The chassis is fabricated mainly from 0-25 in. mild steel plate, welded together, and the battery (when fitted) is enclosed iii a separate welded steel case. Overall dimensions of the tractor are 5 ft. 9 in. long by 3 ft. l in. wide.
