Certainly it goes back to the steam raction engine era but I would have hesitated o suggest a firm date until, during a discusion with George Gregory, TRTA North Western division secretary, my attention was drawn to Col. H. C. B. Rogers' excellent book, Turnpike to Iron Road, published in 1961. The writer gives 1857 as the year when a train of five vehicles, totalling 17 tons, was hauled by a steam engine from Thetford to Stratford, covering 22 miles in 10 hours on the first day.
