THE London firm of W. and R. Wallace Industries, Ltd., Pentonville Road, Islington. were fined £10 with 20 gns. costs at Clerkenwell recently for permitting 15 of their drivers to work an excessive number of hours without a break and permitting them to keep incorrect records.
In mitigation, it was stated that the drivers, during working hours, had two substantial rest periods—one when they took time off for breakfast and another while sitting in their cabs waiting in long queues to unload their cargoes when they reached their destinations.
The magistrate said he felt the offences were technical ones and he would impose only nominal fines, looking at them in that light.
