THE updated brake system which DAF first began to fit to its 2800 and 3300 series in January this year is now a standard fitment on all DAF models sold in the UK. Numerous detail changes have been made to improve braking safety, simplify installation and make maintenance and repair easier.
The new foot brake valve is a pilot type, that is it controls braking pressure by signalling a relay valve. This arrangement makes the inclusion of a retarder, easy, gives a shorter reaction time, and takes up less space in the cab area.
DAF's front and rear axle braking circuits have been interchanged so that the rear brakes are applied in advance of the front to give "a favourable braking effect". The system's working pressure has been increased from 6.6-7.3 bar to 7.5-8.1 bar and the tractive units' trailer connections now have automatic coupling heads to make air cocks unnecessary.
All the air line connections between chassis and cab are now made by means of three male/female blocks making coupling and uncoupling and maintenance checks easy.
To reduce failures caused by electrical overloading DAF's stop light switch circuit now includes a relay. The load sensing valve operating linkage has been changed so that it is controlled from the axle's centre and braking is no longer affected by axle wind-up. Other changes include relocation of the cab's crossover air lines, a new type of antifreezer and an electri-cally operated water drain valve.
