,QN the average, nearly id. of every fare paid by passengers of Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., was taken by the Government in fuel and road tax. said Mr. R. P. Beddow, M.Inst.T., chairman, at the company's annual general meeting, on Wednesday.
During the past year it had been possible, for the first time since the war, to arrest to some extent the alarming rate at which working costs per mile had increased. Now, however, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, had doubled the tax on fuel, and there was again good reason -for apprehension about future costs. Apart from heavy taxation, the industry, said Mr. Beddow, was facing a claim for additional wages and was having to pay more for fuel.
Last year Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., set up several new records, Gross revenue amounted to 0,674,000, compared with £3,502,000 in the previous year, and the number of passengers carried rose from 197,000,000 to 209,500,090.
The company has on order 114 underfloor-engined single-deckers 30 ft. long.
