A NEW-STYLE freight transport system conceived by British Rail Research is being shown at Rail Freight '81, the Private Wagon Federation's Exhibition at British Rail Motorail Terminal, Olympia.
Known as MIN ICON, the system is designed to carry on rail the freight traffic in the 0.75 to 5-tonne range which is now almost exclusively road-hauled.
It aims to bring the benefits of container operation to the customer with small loads. The current research programme is aimed at serving and providing the equipment required if the MINICON system was to be adopted.
The exhibition, which closes at 4pm today (Saturday) was opened by Transport Secretary Norman Fowler on Tuesday. He praised the Show as productive co-operation between public and private sectors, and said the Railways Board's corporate plan provides that between now and, 1990 freight carrying in private wagons will increase by 54 per cent.
