ving read CM's report on 1 staffing levels, I thought u might be interested in aring from the other side of ; fence, that of the rank and ! of the NUR.
As a local representative that union at NCL's Swindon pot I appreciate there is a ar need for National Carriers a whole to economise. t I fail to appreciate the etude that forces depots rking at a profit—and with od industrial relations—into aos and disputes.
As a union representative I I aware of the need for good stomer relations and for the Derision of good regular rvice to the customer. But many of NCL's customers 11 verify, regular collections d deliveries are not being tintained, and it is on this sis I challenge Dr Warner's ttement that coverage would e be affected; and I also ow of many anomalies in the ?dallion service.
Management seem to have e idea that manpower can reduced in direct proportion the traffic level, but when et are serving a Green Belt ea this is just not true.
I accept the point made by r Land that for a manager be worth his salt he must alise the need to reduce anpower, but it should be ne on a depot by depot eis and not by the faceless dies in John Street in London. NCL must remain as a enpany in its own right, and is will not be done by the rgmatic couldn't-care-less titude of higher management.
I appeal to NCL : let's all be nsible, don't keep passing e buck back to the men who the work.
