• The Scottish Bus Group needs protection from "predators south of the border", said Shadow Scottish Secretary Donald Dewar in the Commons last week during a debate on the Scottish Transport Group. Scottish Secretary Malcolm Rilkind confirmed that SBG would be offered for sale as 1 units and said that he was kee that employee participation should be increased. That would be encouraged by providing financial help to teams ( managers and employees wanting to bid for their companies enhancing the likelihood of locally-based management witl "real employee participation".
Dewar said that this was a tacit recognition that privatisation was not a univeral remed: and called on Rifkind to rule out asset-stripping by the new company.
