This was the first sentence of a telegram sent to the Chancellor of the Exchequer by the British Omnibus Companies' Public Relations Committee, following the announcement of reductions in purchase tax on certain luxury and other items.
The telegram pointed out that the fuel tax was largely, responsible for fares increases, and asked the Chancellor to give priority to reductions in taxation of essential services.
A resolution calling upon the Government to review the imposition of fuel tax, with a view to its abolition, was passed by Nottingham City Council on Monday. In 1953, the tax cost the city's transport undertaking 1119,475.
