DAYMENTS from the Road Fund
in the year ended March 31, 1953, were £1,076,492 less than was provided in the estimates, according to the accounts, which were published by the Stationery Office (at 4d.) on Monday. The amount paid out was £32,179,508, against the estimate of £33,256,000.
Grants to highway authorities were £537,189 less than was estimated. These included payments of £17,993,912 for maintenance and minor improvements of classified roads—L743,912 more than was estimated. A total of £1,739,917 was spent on new construction tt.tid improvements, a saving of £1,115,083 arising mainly from delay in starting new schemes. • Against an estimate of £11,322,500 for trunk roads, only £10,979,634 was spentr---a saving of £342,866. Maintenance and minor improvements cost £8,973,287—£273,287 more than was estimated.
