Conditions of carriage and advance notice for hazardous goods vary slightly between companies.
Belfast Freight Ferries Contact: 01524 855988.
From Heysham to Belfast and Dublin.
No livestock.
The company needs at least 12 hours' notice and copy of the dangerous goods note, either faxed in advance or presented when the vehicle checks in at the docks. The load will then be inspected to check it is suitable to be transported by sea.

North Shields to Gothenburg, Bergen, Hamburg and Amsterdam. Immingham to Gothenburg. Harwich to Gothenburg.
Livestock Is carried—mostly race horses—at the discretion of the ferry's master. At least 48 hours' notice needed, especially in winter.
Hazardous goods are restricted to classes 3, B and 9 in the summer. A faxed copy of the DGN is needed on the morning of sailing.

The tunnel Is regulated by the Inter Governmental Commission and the Safety Authority based on the European Agreement concerning the international carriage of dangerous goods by road (ADR). In addition some special rules apply so hauliers should always check by phone first. "Some products can come through us which can't go on the ferries," says Mark Oilliand, Eurotunnel's marketing manager. "The percentage of ADR-regulated goods transported by Eurotunnel is extremely small.Eurotunnel has built up a database which allows it to give immediate advice.

Needs at least 24 hours' notice of

seven days' notice for explosives.

Holyhead to Dublin. Pembroke to Rosslare.
The company is reviewing its livestock policy; it carries bloodstock under supervised conditions. Hazardous goods must be registered when booking.
P&O Stena Line Contact: 01304 863841.
Dover to Calais.
Livestock for breeding purposes are taken on freight-only services; shipments must be supported by documentation. All hazardous goods paperwork is checked by P&O Stena Line staff and spot checks on paperwork and vehicle loads can be expected. No explosives are carried.
P&O European Ferries
Contact: 01705 301333. Portsmouth to Le Havre. Cherbourg and Bilbao. For hazardous goods the Portsmouth Port Authority requires separate notification 24 hours in advance, by fax to the harbour master on 01705 824662; or by telex on 19312110368.
Truckline (Brittany Ferries) Contact: 0870 9040 200.
Poole to Cherbourg and Santander. Portsmouth to Caen and St Mato. Plymouth to Roscoff, Santander and St Mato. Breeding livestock only with 48 hours' notice. Expect to be checked at the docks for compliance with MAFF regulations. Hazardous goods need at least 24 hours' notice.
One vessel on the Poole to Cherbourg route can take explosives and radioactive substances in small quantities.
Stone Line

Harwich to Hook Of Holland. Stranraer to Belfast. Holyhead to Dun Laoghalre and Dublin. Fishguard to Rossiare.
Livestock is not carried in large quantities. Hazardous goods need at least 24 hours' notice. Stena Line has a database of all substances, UN numbers and classes; this system automatically checks segregation and compatibility with the ship.
Swansea Cork Ferries

Horses carried with a minimum of 48 hours' notice and at the discretion of the master. Animals must be accompanied with veterinary certificates. No cattle, sheep or pigs are carried, and no hazardous goods.
