nR. BEECHINGS long-awaited plan
to revolutionize Britain's railways has now been completed and was handed over to the Minister of Transport last week-end. It is now only a matter of a few weeks before the proposals to make the ailing railways pay once more are published in detail.
Mr. Marples himself will be the first to go through the report. A high-powered official inter-departmental working party has already been set up to look next at the proposals and give its advice. Finally. any Government action will need the approval of the full Cabinet.
Mr, Marples himself made it clear last week that the Government is contemplating "for the time being" subsidization of uneconomic transport services. But the subsidies would he restricted to definite services. " Very different from open-ended subsidization of railway deficits to the extent of £170 million a year". he added.
More Lorry Parks MORE long-distance lorry parks are urgently needed to ease the congestion in the London docks area, the National Association of British Manufacturers stated last week.
This is one of the proposals made in a statement to the Minister of Transport on certain regional aspects of the Rochdale Committee Report on the Docks.
The Association suggests that greater use should be made of tideways and waterways for overside loading and unloading, particularly in London, Southampton. Avonmouth and Hull.
