I feel that I must comment on K. W. Hutchingson's kick at the non-existent 24-hour commercial garage facilities (CM, February 2).
I cannot understand companies who run long-distance trucks about the country—often at times when other businesses are closed and then, when the inevitable happens can get no assistance from too few so called commercial vehicle repairers, just sit down and have a good, old British -moan". The answer is in your pocket: don't be mean, pay £4,000 to £6,000 for a truck. Just equip it, first with a good kit of tools, then make up a spares kit to suit it along these lines: 1 top hose, '1 bottom hose, 1 set of fan belts, 2 correct size hose clips, spare bulbs and fuses, 1 large roll insulating tape, 1 injector pipe (longest one which could be bent to fit), roll of soft copper wire, 1 spare primary fuel filter element, 1 gallon can engine oil, 1 gallon can gear oil.
Make sure the driver knows how to use them, then if you ever get in this mess again— you may decide to sack the driver.
