agreed at the request of the Road Haulage Association to allow drivers whose vehicles break down on motorways to telephone their employers for instructions.
The R.H.A. says there have been frequent complaints that repairers Officially appointed to salvage -vehicles which -break down on motorways have sent inadequate towing vehicles or have fitted unsuitable tyres. It has also been alleged that unreasonably high charges have been made for salvage services..
Drivers are now advised to. ask the police official who answers the motorway emergency telephone to make a reversed-charge call to his employers. The operator then has the option of salvaging the vehicle himself.
If the presence of the vehicle on a motorway would cause danger it will obviously have to be removed as quickly as possible, otherwise it will be allowed to remain until the owner can arrange to attend to it.
