DESPITE rumours to the contrary the Department of Transport has clearly stated that the Transport and Road Research Laboratory is not to be closed down.
The Laboratory is studying ways of saving money in line with Government spending policy, but its research commitments for this year and next will be completed.
The Transport and General Workers Union in Reading is not aware of any cutbacks or privatisation at TRRL though it is understood that the Government is "looking at" research and development establishments.
The Laboratory has just appointed a new part-time director, Ron Bridle, whose brief is to "pull the Laboratory back up again," according to a TRRL spokesman. It is understood that the staff of TRRL has been reduced from 1,000 to about 600 over the last four years.
