1AECHAN1ZED handling and disposal 1V1 arc being employed in Scotland for a scheme involving the collection, compression and dispatch to steelworks of. cars for scrap. Bruce-Laird Ltd., West Fountain Place, Edinburgh. are using teams of vehicles each comprising one Bedford 5/6-tonner equipped with a Hiab crane, and one articulated outfit. The Hiab is used to load the semi-trailer and its own Bedford rigid, the pair of vehicles being capable of carrying about eight cars between them.
These teams deliver direct to BruceLairds new Lindemann press, which can handle 100 tons a day and compresses the car bodies to 2 ft. by 2 ft. by 1 ft. units which are loaded direct on to waiting rail wagons. In practice the bodies are stripped before compression but the press can crush complete cars.
Film on International Road Haulage: As a result of initiative taken by IRU, Swiss television (Television Romande) will be showing on their French-speaking service at 8.20 p.m. on October 16 a film on international road transport, entitled " International Cross Roads ". The film follows the journey of a road train under 'FIR from Basle to Amsterdam, and the valuable part played by TIR on International commerce is the main theme. Later in the year the film will be shown on German and Italian programmes. It is also planned to show it to the meetings of the Presidency and Council of Direction of 1RU to he held in Geneva on October 21 and 22.
