THE TRANSPORT and General Workers' Union card check, which was due to start at docks on Monday this week, was postponed due to the dockers' own industrial dispute. Another date will be set when the dock dispute is settled.
The docks and road transport (commercial) sections of the TGWU had agreed to stop lorry drivers at docks and refuse to load those who were not carrying the new haulage drivers' card.
Drivers who are considered unfit for union membership face exclusion from the Transport and General Workers' Union in South Wales if they let their union dues lapse.
Under union rules, any driver who gets behind with payments has to re-apply for membership, and normally this is granted as a matter of routine. But if the TGWU regional committee in Cardiff considers someone unfit for membership, it can refuse membership.
