• A sense of perspective was needed about the contribution to pollution from motor vehicles, said Mr Eldon Griffiths, UnderSecretary of State for the Environment, in the Commons last week.
He told MPs that the Institute of Petroleum had recently done a mock-up of the emissions of sulphur dioxide in a typical medium-sized town.
It discovered that domestic heating emissions would be responsible for about 2000 tons a year of these emissions, the generation of electrical power would add a further 2000 tons, and all the motor vehicles in the town would be responsible for only 50 tons.
