• Reports of increased police vigilance on the adequacy of container securing on lorries, especially in the London area, are given extra relevance by the publication of an articleon the subject in a recent issue of Clearway, the traffic magazine of the Metropolitan police. The .writer, Sgt John
Graham, explains the methods of container securing, the hazards and the forces involved. He also includes the National Freight Federation code of practice for securing containers on vehicles.
A significant comment in the article refers to the use of ropes for securing containers, especially when passed through the often rough corner castings of a container. This is referred to by the police writer as "dangerously inadequate" in the opinion of most responsible authorities.
Chains are referred to as a second-best alternative to twistlocks, but warning is given that many chains now used are below acceptable strength.
