• In a letter from Mr Eldon Griffiths, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Department of the Environment, to Mr Robert Redmond, MP for Bolton West, it is confirmed that when the Government implements its plans for the reorganization of local government, control of area passenger transport systems is to be handed to local authorities.
Mr Redmond had written to Mr Griffiths on March 18 asking about the position because some people had expressed doubts concerning the future of the SELNEC Passenger Transport Authority.
In the letter, Mr Griffiths says that under the White Paper proposals, transport, along with highways and traffic, is to be the responsibility of the new counties (including metropolitan counties).
He writes: "The Passenger Transport Authorities will certainly cease to exist and the new Metropolitan Council will take over their responsibilities and functions, including control of the Executives. Precisely what the relationship should be is still to be decided—the GLC /LTE system has worked well in practice and has much to recommend it".
