ABOUT one-third of all accidents and breakdowns on Britain's motorways are due to tyre failures, said the Minister of Transport, speaking last week at Charnock Richard service area on M6 motorway after the formal opening of the Lancashire section of the road.
The Road Research Laboratory and the tyre manufacturers _had done research on this problem of tyre failure, and this would continue he said. " But one fact sticks out a mile —most of these breakdowns and accidents could have been avoided. Tyre failures and other evidence we see on the motorways—boiling radiators, broken fan belts, burst hoses and the like—are all certain signs that vehicles are being over-driven or are not fit for the road."
