THE TRANSPORT Minister's lorry route document (CM last week) has been criticized by Mr Robert Phillipson, director of the British Road Federation, as being inadequate. It did not, he said, include some of the most important roads in-Europe.
Mr Phillipson said that while the Federation approved of the principle of designated routes, this could only be achieved if there was an adequate road network to take the traffic.
As an example it was clearly nonsense to sever the route from the Mid
lands to the East Coast ports compelling lorries to go as far north as Nottingham in order to reach Felixstowe, The Federation is intending to give its comments to the Minister and will ask him to reconsider the omission from the document of the following routes: MI/Al link; M I extension from Pudsey to Dishforth; the Aire Valley Motorway; M40 Oxford to Birmingham Motorway; the Manchester to Sheffield Motorway; and the Manchester Outer Ring Road.
