Long-term trials were :ing carried out into two pes of anti-jack-knife 'stem by the DoE with the co-operation of liritish Road Services. After the evidence of the effectiveness and reliability of the systems had been assessed he ),s,ould then be considering whether there was a case for the introduction of mandatory requirements designed to minimize or eliminate the incidence of jack-knifing.
The Minister said that in 1973 there were 447 accidents involving jackknifing but jack-knifing was not necessarily the cause of the accidents, A number of reports from the Transport and Road Research Laboratory had been published on the subject, said Mr Mulley.
