VEHICLES working under contract to public authorities have been brought into the scope of drivers' hours and tachograph regulations.
The European Court has over-ruled an earlier interpretation of the rules which said that these vehicles would be exempted in the same way as vehicles owned by public authorities.
It says this applies only to vehicles "owned or controlled" by a public authority.
Very few hauliers expect to suffer from this ruling, as most are under obligation to follow the regulations for some aspects of their activities.
The Department of Transport says that the new ruling supersedes advice given in the latest edition of A Guide to Goods Vehicle Drivers' Hours.
