*The simplified ''four fares" plan for Birmingham City Transport buses (CM last week) was postponed by the city's transport committee. Under the plan fares would be based on the 6d piece, with 6d, 1 s, and is 6d fares and the possibility of 2s Od fares for some longer routes.
However, the committee, at its meeting last week, agreed to ask the Traffic Commissioners to confirm experiments with this fares structure on the Bristol Road and Erdington group of services. Mr. W.G. Copestake, general manager of BCT, was asked to produce a fuller report for the committee's February meeting.
Committee chairman Cllr. Donald Lewis. said that there was no intention of abandoning the scheme and he hoped that. following Mr. Copestake's report, the plan would be adopted. Labour spokesman Cllr. Ken Barton said that the Labour group felt that the plan was a little premature. Members were concerned about the public's reaction to a rise to 6d of the present 4d fare.
It was reported at the meeting that 200 new machines capable of taking 6d and 'Is pieces had been ordered by the undertaking.
