• The transport of chocolate biscuits is a serious business, and to ensure its products arrive in peak condition all year round, United Biscuits has expanded its fleet of airconditioned trailers. The modified CT Fruehauf Coolliners are cooled by a dedicated aircon system rather a downrated fridge unit. The interior temperature can be maintained between 15-18'C in ambient summertime temperatures up to 30-C; the interior height is 165mm higher than usual to allow even airflow.
The two-piece air-con kit comprises a permanently fitted compressor and evaporator on the front bulkhead powered by an under-floor drive motor. The motor, which can be removed to save weight during the cooler months, lives in a pressurised casing to help keep it clean.
The air-conditioned Coolliners and their conventional insulated stablemates run on air-suspended and disc-braked SMB axles; they have reduced cross-member spacings to cope with fork-lift truck loading, United Biscuits is a confirmed CT Fruehauf customer: it recently disposed of a batch of 18year-old trailers and Is still running a number of 10-year-olds.
