Co. announced a 15 per cent rebate for ship-discharging rates for timber arriving in packaged form at Manchester provided that one-third or more of a ship's cargo is packaged. Each year more than 300.000 tons of timber is handled from Canada, Scandinavia, Russia and West Africa.
[his Follows a 20 per cent rebate allowed in March on general cargo for export presented in unit loads on wooden pallets. which has proved a great success. Mr. Walter Present, the docks manager, said at Monday's Press conference: "We are doing it to try to encourage the use of .mechanical handling. which must result in a speed-up."
