• The relentless growth of lorry traffic through Dover ha gone on in the first two months of this year, with a 13.5 per cent increase in the number of road haulage units through the docks.
Figures for January and February show the number oi commercial road haulage unit: (a tractive unit and semi-traile count as two units) rose from 117,037 in 1985 to 132,924. Other roll-on/roll-off freight climbed by 48.49 per cent to 28,181 units and the tonnage of cargo handled rose by 11.1 per cent from 1.39 tonnes to 1.55 tonnes.
There has also been an increase in the number of ferry services from Dover, ut by 4.9 per cent from 5,800 in 1985 to 6,084.
Dover Harbour Board expects the direct trader input (DTI) computerised and speeded-up freight documentation system to come into operation soon. That is designed to be able tc clear properly documented lorries within an hour of arrival.
