UNITED AUTOMOBILE SERVICES LTD., has applied for a licence to operate a bus service between Newcastle upon Tyne (Marlborough Crescent) and Apperley Dene, Northumberland, with occasional journeys to Scales Cross. This service has been operated for the past 33 years by N. W. Norfolk, of New Ridley, Stocksfield, who is retiring after being in the bus business for 38 years. It is understood that United has acquired the goodwill of the service.
Norfolk's service made news in 1957 when his applicatibn to be allowed to pick-up passengers along some two miles of route common to United was granted. At On same time, a 5d. protective fare from 1.1,z first stop along Norfolk's route at the point where it left the United service was removed, both changes being granted to help Norfolk's business. Subject to the granting of the United application, certain journeys on their Newcastle to Branch End service will be withdrawn. Mr. Norfolk intends to sell his fleet of three Dennis Lancet coaches.
