DEVELOPMENT of Carlisle's threatened white elephant, an 11-acre £1/2m lorry park, on the Kingstown trading estate on the outskirts of the city, has been revived following a hold-up when the original company carrying out the scheme went into liquidation. Last week Carlisle City Council, owner of the industrial trading estate, agreed to offer two companies which have taken on the unfinished project a concessionary rent for three years.
The lorry park, which was opened nearly three years ago with great hopes of taking heavy haulage off the city streets and parks, has now been taken over by Derek Leslie of Dalston, Carlisle, and Geoff Bell of Kirkhampton, near Carlisle.
The concessionary rent will apply while ancillary services are being set up and then the rent will be negotiated annually for a further four years to a maximum of £7,150.
The Leeds firm which originally bought the 11-acre site began building a motel block for lorry drivers mainly, but the site was then put up for sale by the liquidators.
Now the park is operating with five security staff and the hotel (or motel) has been renamed the Carlisle Truck Inn.
It has been stated that the latter needed comparatively little expenditure to make it fully operational. The city council's Kingstown's estate is now an established haulage and motor complex including 24-hour breakdown service and a Ministry testing station opened in 1968 which can also carry out spot-checks on passing lorries in conjunction with the police.
