IN CONJUNCTION with its Japanese associate, Toyo Koyyo Co Ltd, Perkins Engines of Peterborough has developed a six-cylinder diesel engine suitable for light vehicles.
The new engine, the 6.247, has a capacity of 4,050cc (247cu in) and produces 75kW (101bhp) at 3,600rpm. At the moment, Perkins expects to market the engine mainly in the Far East for light truck use, but it will also be available for American Camper or mobile home applications. In fact, the engine is currently being tested in such a vehicle and it is hoped it will be on show at Earls Court this year.
The engine is a direct descendant of the four-cylinder 4.165 which is fitted to the VW LT range, but has a 50 per cent increase in capacity with its two extra cylinders. Output of the engine is not expected to rise above 200 units a year, but it's conceivable that UK manufacturers may be interested in fitting it to their "second generation" light trucks.
