INDEPENDENT bus operators will be entitled to receive bus grant to replace one heavyweight vehicle every 12 years if they cover 20,000 miles a year on stage carriage mileage. Lightweight vehicles will be expected to last eight years before replacement.
This is part of a scheme worked out by the Confederation of British Road Passenger Transport (CPT) and just agreed by the Department of the Environment.
Cash left over from this will be split between the nationalised and municipal sectors on the basis of a national fleet valuation on present vehicles.
This change will avoid exceeding the total of £42.25m imposed as a ceiling for the financial year 1976-77 by the DoE.
The CPT has sought an assurance that the bus grant will continue beyond 1980. but the DoE is not yet prepared to commit itself on this point.
