THOUSANDS of Americans have been persuaded that they can improve petrol consumption by attaching a pair of 31/2in 4oz magnets to the fuel line near the carburettor. The idea is that the magnetic field creates a small current that heats the petrol slightly. Because the molecules expand, less petrol is needed for proper combustion.
A likely tale, says Autocar. But one of the six American makers of magnets for insertion into cows' stomachs to attract accidentally swallowed metal objects is now selling ten times its normal output to gullible motorists.
Perhaps when it comes to swallowing rubbish there is not much to choose between twolegged and four-legged ruminants.
