THE Government wants to be given the power to confiscate counterfeit vehicle parts.
Questioned in the Commons about plans to deal with fake British vehicle parts by overseas manufacturers, the Minister for Consumer Affairs Sally Oppenheim said that through the European Community, the Government was pressing for the finalisation of a GATT Agreement on measures to discourage their importation.
Under this agreement signatories would be able to seize goods reasonably suspected of being counterfeit.
The Minister for Trade was due to see representatives of the industry this month to revue the evidence of bogus parts and to consider what further action might betaken.
Mrs Oppenheim pointed out that the Government made representations on a bilateral basis when possible where adequate evidence of counterfeiting was available and UK manufacturers had been unable to obtain redress through legal processes,
