With the object of giving further impetus to the gas-producer movement, the Rheinisch-Westfalische Kohlen Syndicat, with which the principal mining concerns in Rhenish Westphalia are associated, has recently announced the details of a competition for the best form of generator for motor vehicles using solid fuel—anthracite, coke, etc. —produced in the Ruhr, Saar and Aixla-Chapelle mining areas.
A prize fund of about £10,820 has been organized. This sum is divided into first, second, and third prizes of £4,160, £2,500 and £1,660 respectively, with consolation prizes to the extent of £2,500.
The competition will be divided into two categories, i.e., 'for lorries of 31-4ton and 6-61-ton capacity, each to be capable of hauling a trailer with a corresponding loading capacity. The producers must be capable of running the engine without the use of any oil or spirit, and carry sufficient fuel for a minimum distance of 62i miles.
The competing vehicles will be subjected to a preliminary and a final test, the latter consisting of a run extending to 15,625 miles, divided into daily stages of 250-285 miles, with two drivers for each machine.
Entries will be received up to February 1 next. The preliminary,, tests are to take place during next summer and the final trial two months later. Full particulars of the competition maybe obtained from the Syndicate, Postfach 937, Essen, Germany.
