AOST vehicle conversions involve IVI enlargement to something bigger than the original but this Bedford conversion by United Service Garages Portsmouth Ltd. is an exception, having been made smaller than when it left Luton. It resulted from an inquiry for a 7-ft.wide four-wheel-drive tug to tow soil sterilization plant around the very narrow lanes of Guernsey. The vehicle, an it-type Bedford, is now 84 in. wide and has a wheelbase of only 110 in.; the unit has power-assisted steering, a five-speed gearbox, 13-in, clutch, power take-off, 17,000 lb. rear axle and 11.00-20 12-ply tyres.
Seen in the picture with a I5-ton boiler in tow, the Bedford has proved very successful, says H. I. Gilroy Co. Ltd,, the owners. Ballasted to weigh five tons it has been able to move off from a standstill on the steepest gradients encountered, while its small dimensions have enabled it to negotiate very tricky entrances.
