THE cab on the latest range of normal-control tractive units introduced by Mack Trucks Inc. of America is unusual in that it is offset 11 in to the left-hand side. This puts the driver almost directly behind the left-hand wing and besides providing better forward vision is said to be an advantage when reversing and passing vehicles on the road.
The new range is called the U Series and includes fourand six-wheeled versions for gross train weights up to 80,000 lb,
(35-7 tons). There are more than 20 model variations and another of the advantages of the cab
design is said to be that
the full range of Mack diesel engines-from a 140 b.h.p. in-line six-cylinder to a 255 b.h.p. V8 unit can, be accommodated in the engine compartment within the limits of a 7-ft. 6-in, bumper-to-backof-cab dimension. Ready access to the engine is provided by tiltingthe plastic bonnet and wings as a unit.
Gearboxes available in the U Series range from a five-speed to an 18-speed.
