TOensure the rigidity of the concrete base walls supporting the 45 ft. tower of a new radio telescope being built at ChilboIton, near Andover, over 709 tons of Premix concrete was poured continuously in one day. Nine Dodge truckmixers with Stothert and Pitt 6-cu.-yd. equipment were used by the Andover plant of Premix (an Amey Group company) to carry
out the non-stop operation, augmented by loads from the Basingstoke and Chandlers Ford plants.
" The walls will be 12 ft. 6 in. thick, 5 ft. deep and 60 ft. in diameter. The telescope, scheduled for completion in January, is being built for D.S.I.R. by the Ministry of Public Building and Works. A.E.I. of Manchester hold the main contract for the job but the concrete tower is being built by Campbell and McGill of Winchester.
