SA F, the West German axle and suspension manufacturer, has introduced the RS9042, .1 new nine-tonne trailer axle which is 10 per cent lighter than the axle it siipersedes.
It has a single-piece tubular beam of' constant diameter. Bearing diameter has been increased and weight has been trimmed from the hubs.
'Hie inner hub diameter is now large enough to accommodate an anti-lock brake system's toothed ring and wheel speed sensor.
The usual position for anti lock sensors on trailer axlcs inboard of the brake drums.
SAF has chosen the new position for the ring and sensor to make them more accessible for repair and maintenance and to give them better protection front brake heat.
SAF is also developing .1 "super lightweight" air suspension for the Nineties. using GRP composite quarter elliptic springs for locating the axle, and aluminium alloy hanger brackets.
A prototype of the new suspension was on display Strasbourg last week at thc European Transport Maintenance Council conference.
