THE PROSPECT of large scale disruption of Dublin city bus services looked close again this week as Coras loinpair Eireann, Ireland's semistate transport company, made another attempt to introduce large capacity oneperson-operated buses.
CIE has made several abortive attempts to introduce 0P-0 double-deckers and high capacity single-deckers in Dublin since 1967, and last week went ahead with plans to operate high capacity single-deckers on nine services feeding on to its Dart rapid transit railway system.
Ireland's Labour Court ruled in favour of CIE's proposed conditions for the operation of the new services, upon which 44, rather than five, standing passengers are carried, but trades unions have refused to co-operate.
Over 20() drivers who failed to turn up for training have been suspended, and city services were expected to be disrupted increasingly in the course of this week.
Further trouble is expected next month when CIE makes another attempt to introduce 0-P-0 double-deckers.
Trades unions want a nochange fares collection system.
