NAORE vehicles prohibited from use, LVImore operators prosecuted and no improvement in standards of vehicle maintenance forms the general basis of most of the Licensing Authorities' annual reports to the Minister of Transport for the year 1963-4. Obtainable from H.M. Stationery Office, price 6s. 6d. (1s. dearer than last year), the reports also reveal that while the work of the LAs' staffs has increased—in particular in the enforcement and maintenance fields— there still remains a shortage of officers in most areas.
The reports show a rise in the number of new A licences granted over the previous year (there were 1,540 in 1962-3 and 1,769 last year), and also new Contract A licences (3,602 last year and 2,816 the previous year). New C licences granted last year totalled 53,631—an increase of 2,470 over the year before, while new B licences showed an increase of 720.
