• An under-3-ton-unladen tipper was completed last week by Truck Engineering Ltd, 100 Dudley Road East, Oldbury, Warley, Worcs, that is equipped with an all-plastics 5 Cu yd body, has a plated weight of 9.3 tons and can carry a payload of 6.3 tons. It is based on a second-hand Bedford K VA tractive-unit chassis and is the first of 26 vehicles of the type to be produced by the company; the remaining 25 will be based on new KVA chassis. Tipping gear is an Edbro 1LN front-of-body unit that is recessed into the bulkhead. The weight of the body without tipping gear is 3 cwt 20 lb.
Features of the body include a sub-structure which incorporates runners, cross members. floor and front bulkhead in a single moulding, the runners being bridged by integral arches in line with the outriggers. Having a thickness of 2in., the sides and tailboard are filled with rigid foam to increase their strength and to provide resilience, while the floor has a thickness of in. Wood inserts are used at the points of attachment of the hinge-pin brackets and the bulkhead is plated with aluminium in the tipping bracket area.
