ONLY one person died after an accident involving the load of a bulk chemical tanker in the past 10 years—although more than two million journeys by such vehicles were made on Britain's roads during that time.
This claim was made by Mr Martin Trowbridge, directorgeneral of the Chemical Industries Association, when he opened a safety conference in London last week.
"If this performance is compared with the annual death toll of over 7,000 due to general accidents on our roads it emphasises the strength of the industry's claim to operate responsibly and safely," he said.
"What few emergencies have occurred have been expertly contained and handled by the emergency services. However, we must never become complacent; eternal vigilance is the price we must gladly pay f or chemical safety."
