WILL the unions heed the Road Haulage Association's repeated warnings that only a token wage rise can be awarded in the next round of negotiatiations? More than half the 16 per cent advance in hauliers' costs in the first six months of the year was caused by the 20 per cent increase in total labour costs which took effect in most cases at the beginning of January.
It can hardly be a coincidence that serious inflation began only when unions started to enforce ridiculous pay claims_ By what divine right does anyone receive an annual pay increase, whether merited or not?
